uninspected vessel or inspected vessel within the tonnage limitations of
the license with the exception of towing vessels greater than 26 feet.
To qualify for a license as Master greater than 100 tons requires sea
service experience as master or mate while holding a USCG License as
Master or Operator.

Tonnage Limitations
USCG licenses of 200 tons and less are issued in 50 ton increments,
rounded up, using the following formula:
If all your experience was on vessels of less than 5 gross tons you
will be issued a 25 ton license. If any of your experience was on
vessels greater than 5 ton you will be issued a 50 ton license.
License greater than 50 tons are issued as follows:
Either the maximum tonnage that 25% of the qualifying
experience was on OR 150% of the maximum tonnage that
50% of the qualifying experience was on whichever is greater.
Mate 200 ton License
A license as Master authorizes the authority to be in charge of the vessel,
a license as Mate authorizes the authority to be in charge of a navigational
watch.
If you don't have the sea service as Master or Mate while holding a
license, but have experience working on vessels over 50 tons you may
want to consider applying for a license as Mate, the training requirements
are the same as for Master of equal tonnage.
Advancement from mate to master may be accomplished with sea service
experience alone, no additional exams or training is required.
Sea service requirements
Six months sea service experience
One year sea service experience, six months of the required
service may have been on inland waters.
